Fraysse, C.; Petraroia, A..
Mariculture in Argentina has expanded over the last years. Flounders of the Paralichtydae family are a very important fishery resource due to their abundance, meat quality, and high market price. The first mass production of juveniles of Paralichthys orbignyanus in captivity was successfully performed in 2002 at the Estación Experimental de Maricultura (EEM), Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), Mar del Plata. Moreover, it has got potential as a species for cultivation, due to its behaviour in captivity, good growth, survival and feed conversion rates. In this study, the parameters that affect this flounder cultivation under controlled conditions and in closed recirculating seawater system, are presented. Temperature, pH, and...

The growth and survival of juvenile red porgy, Pagrus pagrus, reared in captivity (mean body weigth 81.0 not equal to 37.24g), exposed to two different temperatures (18 degree and 22 degree C)and three salinities (21, 27 and 33 psu)during a 30 day period, were studied. Final survival rate was 100. in all treatments. The highest growth rate was reached at 18 degree C/33 psu with a value of 1.07 /day. There was an inverse trend in the growth rate between the two temperatures. Food consumption increased with the increase of salinity and temperature. The highest food consumption rate was 1.17. (18 degree C/33 psu). The relationships between protein efficiency ration (PER)and salinity were positive at 18 degree C and negative at 22 degree C. The highest values...

Faury, Nicole; Masson, Daniel; Ratiskol, Jacqueline.
The germs decreasing of artificially contaminated oysters Crassostrea gigas has been studied in experimental tanks similar to a shellfish depuration plant, without any chemical or physical water treatment. The oyster were treated by three different water management pattern, compared to a control tank and the germs decreasing studied by MPN method of fecal Coliforms and Streptococus. As a result: 1) it appaears somewhat difficult to conclude in this first attempt about the most efficient treatment. 2) the most important factor in shellfish depuration working is obviously the physiological activity (and stage) of the animals.

Sohier, L; Bianchi, M.
The quantitative and qualitative evolution of the heterotrophic bacterial community of sea water was studied throughout an experimental rearing of Penaeus japonicus in closed systems. Cluster analysis was realised on 417 strains coming from water sampled at different moments of the experiment. This collection includes 40 strains coming from a mussel used for diet and 40 strains coming from the digestive tract of one prawn after six months rearing. Quantitative and qualitative studies have both shown a similar evolution of heterotrophic microflora whatever the initial animal load was. The dendrogram obtained led to a description of characteristics of the various populations constituting the heterotrophic bacterial community of the water environment...

High-density production of the rotifer <i>Brachionus plicatilis</i> in a recirculation system: consideration of water quality, zootechnical and nutritional aspects OMA
Suantika, G.; Dhert, Ph.; Nurhudah, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
Rotifers were reared on the artificial diet culture Selco® in batch and recirculation conditions at different water exchange rates. The different rearing conditions resulted in considerable changes in water quality, which in their turn affected rotifer growth and food consumption. At a daily water exchange rate of 100%, no positive effect was obtained in rotifer growth compared to the batch rearing system, but the rotifer culture period could be prolonged by 1 week. By increasing the daily water exchange rate from 100 to 300% the maximum rotifer density could be significantly (<i>P</i> < 0.05) increased from 1800 to 2500 individuals ml-1. At the highest recirculation rate (daily water exchange of 500%) the highest...

New developments in the high density flow-through culturing of brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> OMA
Lavens, P.; Baert, P.; De Meulemeester, A.; Van Ballaer, E.; Sorgeloos, P..
A closed culture system for the high density culturing of <i>Artemia spp.</i> in 300-liter tanks using a new formula of artificial seawater and micronized waste products from agricultural crops as food is described. Culture conditions are greatly improved by applying a new filter technique and an electronic transparency meter which controls food distributions automatically. A total volume of 6,000 liters of culture water recirculated over a rotating biological contactor, a cross-flow sieve and a plate separator at a flow rate of 3000 liters per hour.Production yields obtained with this culture system, when extrapolated to a 1 m³ tank, indicate that 50 g of brine shrimp cysts can be converted into 20 kg of fresh (wet dry) pre-adult...

Franco, Miguel.
The particulate matter plays an essential role in the functioning of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Rich in organic substances, it provides ideal conditions for the bacterial development, which contribute to its mineralization. The understanding of interactions between the bio-geochemical cycles of carbon and nitrogen in these processes is necessary to define an effective and adapted management of aquaculture facilities. A methodology using natural stable isotopes (13C and 15N) and elemental carbon and nitrogen analysis on particulate matter, allows to identify its sources and to quantify its fluxes. Applying this methodology, we found an enrichment of 13C in dorsal muscle of reared fish and non differences of 13C in fish liver compared to the...

Reproductive performance of <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> females in captivity OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The breeding frequency, fecundity, egg hatchability, larval output and viability of pond-reared, mature <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> females were individually followed up during 180 d. Sexually mature prawns were maintained under controlled laboratory conditions (28.7 C and 12-h light/d) in a 190-L freshwater recirculation system and fed a formulated diet. Ovarian development, moulting and spawning events were checked daily. At least six consecutive moults were recorded for each of the 18 females. The duration of the intermoult period averaged 27.5 d and was not affected by ovarian development or spawning, but intermoult periods followed by spawning had significantly lower growth rates. From a total of 126 moulting events recorded, egg...

Selection of finfish species for aquaculture development in Martinique (FWI). ArchiMer
Thouard, Emmanuel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Marion, J.
Since 1981, in Martinique, a programme of selection of fishes suitable for aquaculture has been conducted. Zootechnical and socio-economical constraints have led to the choice of three species, endemic and exotic: the palometa (Trachinotus goodei ), the red drum (Sciaenops ocellata ) and the red florida hybrid (Oreochromis sp.).
